We are very optimistic about our future and firmly believe that we have turned a new page in Washington’s great history. The long awaited streetscape project has begun, along with two significant redevelopment projects. The first is the Midtown Limited Project, which will include an upscale restaurant, retail and business offices, and 48 condominium units. Demolition of 4 buildings has taken place to make way for this exciting new development. The Regency at Washington Project will include townhouse units in an Age Restricted development on Route 57 East (next to the old Acme). Construction of this project is anticipated to begin shortly.
The many BID events, fairs and markets have brought people back into our town and Washington has become a destination. We now have a business district that continues to thrive and grow each day. We look forward to the many aesthetic changes that will continue, as the BID is working with existing downtown business to help them improve their facades.
Last summer, we lost the Washington Antique Center building to a fire that consumed the structure. This historic building was once the Washington Hardware Store, with the famous hanging hammer (which is still safe and well kept, by the way). Fortunately, we have a well trained and dedicated fire department that was able to contain the horrific fire to one building, ensuring that no other buildings in our community were lost. They are brave men and we recognize their strength and abilities.
Although this tragedy was a shock for many of us, we remain committed to redevelopment and will move ahead aggressively in our efforts to identify those redevelopment areas within our downtown business district that should be prioritized.
The construction of the new municipal garage is anticipated to begin in 2007, the development of the preliminary plans for the Railroad Avenue park project have been completed, the upgrades to the borough pool are expected to begin soon, and we have begun to reconstruct & repave our many streets that are in disrepair.
I realize that in today’s society, many of us find ourselves overextended and unable to attend meetings or seek information in person. This site is intended to provide access to important information and open the lines of communication between the residents of the borough of Washington and the municipal officials and employees. As you navigate the site, you will find a wealth of information available to you. We hope that we can continue to provide you with up to date information on a regular basis. Additionally, there are several links to various agencies and sites that those seeking additional information will find useful.
I am proud to acknowledge the members of the governing body, the many professional employees, the municipal board members and the many dedicated volunteers that are responsible for making this community thrive. By navigating this site, you will come to appreciate, just as I have, how fortunate this community is to have all of them. They are outstanding men and women who are dedicated to the borough of Washington.
Mayor, Marianne Van Deursen
