Frequently asked questions
Swim Team
The Washington Borough Sharks Swim Team is a long standing summer tradition in the Washington Area. Children up to 18 years old participate on a single team and compete against teams in the Penn-Jersey League. The exciting season includes weekly meets, a few local invitational swim meets and a year-end championship. Parents are highly involved in this sport, as it takes many adults to organize and run the meets. Swim team is a wonderful and exciting way for kids to form deep friendships with children in many towns, and introduces them to a lifelong fitness regimen.
What ages participate?
All children who wish to participate must be able to dive/jump into the pool and must be able to complete one lap unaided. Swimmers may compete through the summer of their 18th year.

Swimmers compete in individual and team relay events in backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and butterfly. After age 8, the swimmers are grouped by age and gender, with girls and boys competing together before age 8. Swimmers are selected for races in each meet by the coach.

Practices usually begin indoors in the spring at a local pool (to be designated.). Once the weather warms, the team will practice outside in the evenings in June at the Washington Borough pool. After school gets out, practices begin every morning at 7:00 a.m. Practice times are scheduled by age group. The season ends in the beginning of August with championships for all those swimmers who qualify, based on their times during the season.

Meets begin at 6:00 p.m. and swimmers are expected to be at the pool one hour before. Meets vary in length, but usually last between 2 to 2¾ hours long. Some meets are held in our home pool in Washington and some meets are held at the other team’s home pool. The meets are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Swimmers must wear a bathing suit that is appropriate for competition. These types of suits can be purchased on line or from local sporting good stores. Also, they may purchase a Washington Borough Sharks team swim suit from the approved vendor for the swim team. It is recommended that swimmers have goggles and an approved swim cap.

Provide transportation for the swimmers to and from practice and swim meets. Volunteering at the meets includes marshalling the youngest swimmers to their races, timing the swimmers, running time scores from the timers to the scorers and cheer for the swimmers at all meets! Other volunteer tasks are efficiently organized by the swim team parents’ organization.
